With the Chichester Art Trail over, a number of works have found new homes, which is always gratifying! In particular a favourite piece of mine called  “Sierra 1” went to a new customer. It was one of four pieces I made inspired by the poem “Nothing Gold can Stay” by the wonderful Robert Frost. An image follows with images of Sierra 2 and 4 as well. I was trying to look at the way in which the light changes throughout the day, altering the way in which we perceive colour, which is so beautifully expressed in this poem.I havent reproduced the poem here as I’m not sure about copyright! Sierra 1 is about early morning, and the other three pieces looked at different times of the day. Read the poem and you’ll see what I mean. Poetry and songs have helped me formulate ideas on a number of occasions. Thomas Hardy is another, and even titles from Joan Baez songs have found their way into my visual repertoire! I’ll save those for another post!

Here is Sierra 1, early morning in central Spain, the source of so much personal inspiration

Textile artists, ideas and processes and where to resource these are important for us all. If you don’t know the website http://www.textileartist.org then do have a look. This excellent site has regular articles by practising textile artists, as well as articles offering advice about all sorts of textile matters. I’ve written three articles now for them and have been delighted by the response from visitors to the site from all over the globe.

I’ve spent the last few weeks making a series of small works that I’ll be showing at exhibitions in the coming months, a couple follow for you as does a full image of a larger piece, Downs in Winter. I did put a detail of these on an earlier post but now I have a good image of the whole piece which also shows the framing process, attached to canvas in a box frame, unglazed.

and here are the two small images from my new series, the first is called “Silver Lining” and the second is “Spring Light” part of my Spring sequence, maybe if I stitch it Spring will get here!

Firstly Happy New Year to my followers!

I mentioned this exhibition in my final posting in 2013, so starting the New Year with more information seems like a good idea. The exhibition takes place from January 10th -19th, open from 10-5pm daily, closing at 4pm on the final Sunday.

The Mall Galleries, London SW1 (near Admiralty Arch off Trafalgar Square)

As well as a wide range of textile media on show, quilting, stitching, felting, mixed media and weaving to mention just some of the areas covered, you’ll see wonderful furniture, ceramics and glass, metal and jewellery. You can get a good coffee and scrummy cake there as well! Details on the following website:-www.societyofdesignercraftsmen.org.uk

I’ve already posted some of the images I’ll be showing there as I’ve made them over the past few months-a record of seasonal changes seen on the South Downs.

Here are a couple more for you, looking at stitch detail that I’ve magnified in some cases as they show the way I draw with threads. Enjoy!

I’m very pleased to have been invited once again to show work in this beautiful gallery in Farnham, Surrey, which showcases both The Fine and Applied Arts. You can see three larger stitched canvases, including “Sea Divided” and The Mountains of Mourne (in sun), alongside three smaller works. I’m also currently completing my series called “Skyfall” a seasonal look at the South Downs where we live, which will be shown for the first time in January at the Mall Galleries in London- more about that nearer the time.

Naylor Mountains of mourne

The Mountains of Mourne in Ireland inspired a series of works following a teaching trip there. This is my favourite one, the others have all found new homes! Sunlight on the mountains following the inevitable  Irish rain shower proved inspirational as rich golds and greens play out symphonic variations together.

In “Sea Divided” I looked at the pattern of sunlight on the sea whilst watching the waters change and divide by the passage of the long distance ferry from Santander in Spain.

Those of you familiar with my work will know that much of it is done with with cable stitch. Heavy threads are wound onto the spool and I then turn my base fabric over having stitched in basic lines, to work on the reverse. This allows me to build up rich swathes of colour and long unbroken “couched” lines as opposed to the traditional stitched lines that occur with normal machine stitching. The spool runs out every three minutes so it’s quite labour intensive but there is the added element of surprise when I turn back to the front to see what’s happened!

Fine lines and details are then superimposed from the front over the stitched areas and it is usually this that makes or breaks the work. I use a combination of freely drawn stitched lines- rather like working with a pen or pencil to provide texture and contrast, and then precise, often darker lines are added to redefine forms that need re-drawing or have been lost during the stitching process.

The drawing is the beginning, but it never dominates the end result. Each piece evolves as I work. Movement is affected by fabric distortions which I have to try and control, or to work with, and colours can appear to change quite dramatically as I continue to add different threads. The following detail from a  new piece should demonstrate what I’m saying

Chichester art trail is now over, and we are busy trying to get the house back to normal! It certainly was very good for me, meeting new people as well as friends and returning visitors ,answering the usual  “how do you do it” and “how long does it take” questions which I totally understand! The diptych based on central Spain will be going to its new home this week,( images follow including a stitch detail) as will quite a few new framed  or mounted pieces, small and larger ones. Selling work is just a part of what I do, but it certainly helps and encourages me to make new work. I can’t wait to get the studio sorted ready to start stitching again.

A really busy and successful first weekend on the Art Trail. The photos show some of my work and also from my husband Albert, who is exhibiting life drawing and painting. For those who have seen my earlier posts and exhibitions, I had some great sales, the diptych, Frost on the Downs and the small landscape posted last week amongst others. These trails are a great way to talk to the public and to introduce new techniques to them. so many are unfamiliar with machine embroidery so I did a lot of explaining!

A very busy week after teaching last weekend at Lutterworth in Leicestershire-lovely responsive group from the Embroiderers guild there. It’s full steam ahead for the Art Trail, photos to be posted later but here’s a small embroidery inspired by the winter skies in Lanzarote. I’ve been looking more closely at skies and hope to develop this further in my larger scale works.

A great day on Saturday in London despite the snow, at the AGM of the Society of Designer Craftsmen. Excellent talks included Sumi Perera and Debbie Lyddon who both work broadly within the field of textiles. Sumi makes extraordinary books and installations and Debbie waxes and works into cloth, images follow. You can find links to their websites under the society website link which is on my website page. Seeing work by other artists is so inspiring, makes you want toWilliam Morris Galler William Morris Galler get on, so off to my studio to start a new piece! Both these images were part of their work made for Everyday Encounters Exhibition that I curated at the Willliam Morris Gallery, London, photography by Paul Tucker
